Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program)

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Letters & Science. The College of Letters & Science is the largest on campus comprising 45% of ranked faculty at UWM, graduating 27% of all students at UWM annually, and securing 60% of campus research funding. UWM recently received two significant recognitions. The Carnegie Foundation granted the campus the Community Engagement Classification in 2015 for its significant work in Milwaukee and Wisconsin’s southeast region. In February 2016, UWM was designated a R-1 Doctoral University – Highest Research Activity, by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Of the 115 universities designated as R-1, UWM is among a minority located in an urban setting and one of only 10 with a dedicated urban access mission. UWM enrolls 26,000 students in 14 schools and colleges. Of the total enrollment, about 4,600 are graduate students. Research expenditures in 2016 were $59 million. Community engagement, entrepreneurship, and access are hallmarks of UWM’s mission .

Job Summary

As the chief executive and academic officer for the College of Letters and Science, the Dean has primary responsibility to plan, develop, and administer all aspects of the College’s educational programs, activities, and budget; provide vision in setting priorities and leadership in maintaining academic standards and in strengthening faculty scholarship and research; work with partners across the university; and represent the College within the University, the UW System, the external community and region, with alumni, and with appropriate external agencies and organizations regarding academic programs and standards. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and is a member of the Academic Leadership Council.

Minimum Qualifications

Terminal degree with scholarly qualifications sufficient for appointment as a tenured full professor in a department within the College; and
Proven leadership and administrative experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience working with a wide range of disciplines and degree programs at graduate and undergraduate levels.
Outstanding scholarly achievement in a field or discipline represented within the College of Letters & Science.
Multiple years of experience in budgeting, including the allocation of resources to promote the long-term goals of the unit.
Outstanding record of integrating research and teaching as part of a balanced educational program.
Experience working effectively with shared governance, including a dedication to participative management and transparency.
Sustained record of effective leadership, scholarly and educational accomplishments.
Demonstrated ability to work with and across multiple levels of campus administration.
Experience developing diverse funding streams to further research and education goals.
Demonstrated ability to raise research and academic quality, ranking, and visibility across all units in the College.
Fundraising experience that includes working with prospects and donors to cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts and working with a fund development team to determine fundraising priorities.
Success in encouraging the creative projects of faculty and staff and at providing the support to bring them to completion.
Sustained record in diversifying and supporting faculty, staff, and student populations.
Experience with facilities planning and infrastructure development.
Experience engaging the community that includes participating in alumni engagement efforts, creating relationships with community organizations, attending events as an ambassador for the school/college, making connections with corporate leaders in the region and telling the story of the school/college within the broader community.
