The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) at UWM is the first graduate school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater issues. Our interdisciplinary research and education programs link science with action, and are integrated across four major areas: freshwater system dynamics; human and ecosystem health; freshwater technology; and freshwater economics, policy, and management. It is our goal to be recognized world-wide as the source of expert knowledge on water issues and a catalyst for great ideas that change how people think about and manage water resources.

The School of Freshwater Sciences is housed at UWM’s Harbor Campus at 600 E. Greenfield Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Job Summary

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the School of Freshwater Sciences seek a highly motivated individual with a strong record of professional accomplishments in natural resource policy to serve in an endowed position as the Director of the Center for Water Policy. The Center’s mission is to provide interdisciplinary solutions to resolve regional, national and international problems related to the protection, restoration and conservation of freshwater resources. The Director will provide leadership in positioning the Center for Water Policy, the School of Freshwater Sciences, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a national and international catalyst of water policy research and innovation. The Director will be responsible for building the capacity of the Center, attracting extramural support and sponsorships, recruiting additional researchers both from UW-Milwaukee and the region, and promoting science-based, sustainable water policies within the Great Lakes region and beyond. The Director will also be expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the School of Freshwater Sciences.

The School of Freshwater Sciences is the first graduate school in the U.S. dedicated solely to the study of freshwater and pursues a mission to advance fundamental and strategic science and train the next generation of freshwater scientists and professionals to inform policy, improve management and promote the health and sustainability of the Great Lakes region and freshwater systems worldwide.

Minimum Qualifications

A successful candidate is required to have the following qualifications:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience working toward resolving issues in natural resource policy
- A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of graduate education in policy, economics, law or any other related field in the social or natural sciences

Preferred Qualifications

In addition, the screening committee will consider the following desirable qualifications:
- Professional experience in water policy with a strong record of accomplishment in research, teaching and/or organizational development
- Organizational leadership experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of U.S. and Great Lakes water policy frameworks and issues
- Experience developing and executing organizational growth strategies
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate complex issues clearly
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with academic and non-academic stakeholders
- Administrative experience, including personnel recruitment, employee management and budget preparation and management
- Proven ability to attract extramural support and sponsorships
- Evidence of intellectual rigor and appreciation of the role of natural sciences in informing water policy

To be eligible for consideration for tenured faculty status, candidates must also possess:
- Ph.D. or J.D. degree
- Professional and scholarly achievement sufficient for tenure (consideration will be given to achievement in research and teaching excellence).
