The Archives Department in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries has the two-fold mission of documenting the history of UWM and providing access to primary sources, largely from the metropolitan Milwaukee area, that have long-term research and instructional value for UWM academic programs. We serve as an Area Research Center for the Wisconsin Historical Society, providing access to primary sources from all around the state.

Job Summary

The Digital Archivist is primarily responsible for coordinating the retention, preservation, and long-term accessibility of born-digital records. This position provides support for records creators and users at strategic points in the records life cycle by managing the University Records Management Program, working with manuscript collection donors on their born-digital records, and implementing workflows to preserve and provide access to born-digital records for the future. This position reports to the Head of the Archives Department.

Minimum Qualifications

MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent

• Minimum 2 years of professional experience in archives or a related field

• Evidence of competence in records management standards, records retention and disposition schedules, and technical issues related to digital records

• Evidence of experience with tools, processing techniques, workflow implementation, and preservation systems for born-digital records and archives

Preferred Qualifications

• Records management and/or digital archives certification

• Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of a wide range of computer storage media, file systems, software, and file formats

• Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively within and across organizational boundaries in a diverse organization and with a wide variety of users

• Strong oral and written communication skills to deliver effective training on records management and electronic records

• Strong organizational and analytical skills with proven success in independently prioritizing work.

• Experience working in an academic library environment

• Experience with applying metadata standards and schema for descriptive, structural, and preservation metadata such as DACS, EAD, PREMIS, METS, and MODS

• Experience working in open source software environments

• Experience with electronic records management systems, document imaging systems, or enterprise database systems

• Knowledge of current best practices related to copyright and access issues for born-digital collections

• Ability to understand, use, and innovate with community and ISO standards in a unique context, including OAIS, PAIMAS, and related standards
